ABOUT SLOW FOOD

“It is useless to force the rhythms of life. The art of living is about learning how to give the time to each and every thing.”
Carlo Petrini, founder of Slow Food

Founded in 1986 in Italy, in opposition to the establishment of McDonald’s fast food restaurants, Slow Food became an international nonprofit organization in 1989.

Slow Food is currently made up of nearly 1000 “convivia,” or chapters, whose vast grassroots network of 80,000 members is the greatest strength of our movement.

In Charleston, our six-year-old chapter currently has 200 active members.

Slow Food Charleston advocates for a food system that is based on the principles of high quality and taste, environmental sustainability, and social justice.

We do this through:

  • Educational displays at public events
  • Sponsoring an organic garden project at Sanders-Clyde Elementary School (in collaboration with the Charleston Area Children’s Garden Project and the Yo Art Project)
  • Promoting various events held during the year, highlighting the farmers and chefs who produce and utilize sustainable, fresh, and locally grown food.

It's Time for Lunch!

A national initiative this year, in which our chapter is participating, is the Time for Lunch campaign. The goal of this campaign is to get healthy, real food in the public school lunch program.

Through petitions, political Eat-Ins, and letters/calls to our legislators, we can influence and change the standards and amount of funds available for the National School Lunch Program. This program is coming up for review and reauthorization this March in the US Congress as part of the Child Nutrition Act.

It’s time to act now to protect the health and education of our children.

It’s time for lunch!
